Reasonably early site with our tour guide Nadia and our driver Aiman. Our tour first took us to Pemphis on the east side of the river. The feature of this site was Ramesis II in a magnificant limestone statue Dating from 300 BC. Also at the site were a pair of statues made in granite of the same Pharoah.
We then moved to Sakkara to view the step pyramid built for the pharoah Zoser. Features of this were the entrance to the temple were the first use of stone columns (up to 10m high), however our guide pointed out they were not freestanding as they did not trust columns on their own. At the same site there is a crumbled pyramid which featured the first use of text as well as the tomb of Mere Ruku 2340 BC, a noble that had married the daughter of a king. Had impressive art work showing scenes of life at that time.
From there went on to a carpet school, where young children are taught the art of making magnificant woven carpets. Sandra had a go but would take her a million years to complete compared to the speed of those children!!!
Then on to the pyramids at Giza, and the Sphinx (both of which were amazing). Also at this site saw the solar boat which has been reconstructed from the original timbers found about 50 years ago near the giant pyramid.
Had late lunch at about 3pm then went on the a bazaar and a papyrus making demonstration. Back at hotel about 4 pm.
It was fantastic to see all of these wonderful things after seeing pictures and hearing about them. Surprised at the size of the pyramids and were astounded by the solar boat.
Early night as a 4am start to get off to Luxor the next morning.
Note too sure what we feel about Cairo. Sure is pretty dirty and not a place we really wanted to get out and explore. Great weather though and very comfortable temperature.

Try crossing the street outside the Shepheard to get down to the Nile, maybe you had better not!! Oh yes they don't use lights on their cars at night, further mayhem. You will find Aswan a little more orderly (just a little)! We will think of you on Elphantine Island on the 31st, how wonderful.
Look forward to more news on location from "The Nile".
