Today involved another early venture to the fish market for dinner. Problem was – we were too early. Never mind, after a spot of breakfast we returned to select dinner before heading off for the day.
We had decided to go to Salona today – where you can see the ruins of an ancient roman city – like that of Pompeii – but not as well preserved. The city was first mentioned in 119BC – so it is certainly historic! We took a wander around the entire site – whereas the tourist buses only made it just beyond the entrance. It was well worth our patience as the roman amphitheatre was the highlight of this visit! We had the entire amphitheatre to ourselves – and went ballistic with the photos!!! We’ve only included one with the blog – it is of Karla standing in the middle of the amphitheatre (the lion is out of the photo to the right – Karla had to run…).
Neil has taken a photo of the wagon ruts at Porta Caesarea (1st Century eastern city gate) just for you John (sorry Bev.)
The next adventure was the town of Trogir and first stop was lunch as we were famished. We went to the Kastel Kamerlengo – a castle built around 1420. Only the outside walls are left – but the (dirty) climb to the top was worth the views over the town and port (next photo).
In the old town of Trogir there are many picturesque narrow medieval streets – again we went ballistic with the photos. Neil and Karla climbed the bell tower of the cathedral in the main square and we enjoyed a cold drink after our efforts. The rule is – if there is a tower to climb – we have to climb it. The last photo is of Neil and Sandra at the main entrance to Trogir.
The bus ride back to Split was another long one – and we ended up at an unknown bus station. We grabbed some local jam buns on the way back to while away the time on the walk back to the apartment. Neil and Karla then went back to the old town to see the sub-structures of Diocletian’s palace at a more leisurely pace.
Back to the apartment for brown o’clock. It is Friday after all…
