Day 23 – To Hvar

An early morning start worked well for us today – as we headed to Hvar island via ferry (definitely beats a bus – as we’ve had heaps of those).

The ferry cruise took almost 2 hours and was quite uneventful – but very calm and pleasant. We arrived at Stari Grad to be bussed over to Hvar town. There, we made an immediate beeline for the fortress on the hill (you can’t miss it from the photo of the cannon looking over town). The fortress has been well maintained throughout its illustrious history. The picture of the three of us is after we had visited the fort, the prison, and the museum (featuring items from 3 shipwrecks about 1-2 BC) – back towards the fort. From there, we took a wander along the promenade – both ways and ended up checking up all of the main sites that we could ascertain - as the information centre was closed – and most of the shops were too. They keep telling us it is the off season here – but we can’t understand why – it is amazing weather, still very warm (20 degrees) – but there’s no people!!! We reckon that we could convince Croatia to extend their summer season for a bit longer, sell a franchise, take our money and settle back…

Any way, back to reality – Bev or Dean – did we win Lotto tonight??? We owe Karla a first class plane cabin to Paris…

Jan made a comment (amongst many – THANKS JAN!!!) – about Sandra minding the luggage while Neil and Karla climbed the various towers: Sandra says that we are mad for climbing spiral staircases and claustrophobic towers – coffee is always nicer watching the others do it with a wave!

We are collecting our thoughts on our time in Europe so far – and will post those at the end of our time here (probably from Rome). This may be our last posting from Croatia – so we hope we’ve kept all of our friends and family entertained – and thanks a million to those who have kept us up to date with the news from home. We hope you’ve all enjoyed the posts and the limited comments we have been able to make.

CHEERS FROM SPLIT!!!

I can certainly see why you will all be sad to leave Croatia. I know Karla and Neil (not sure about you Sandra) are in their element when surrounded by and exploring historic ruins. What a wonderful few weeks you’ve had.
I’ve had to look up the map to see exactly where some places (you mention in your blog) are located in relation to the centre of the city in which you are currently staying.
Had a relaxing time at weekend – stayed in Martinborough and home via Greytown yesterday.
News: Labour has axed plans to roll out more spending promises and National has offered to work with the Government to protect our banks as concern mounts about the economy.
Sport: Ferns win was a good boost before heading for OZ. Irene’s stats were 100% (41/41), Tutaia (61%) had fantastic match and Griffin (60%) on in Q4, also played very well at GA.
It’s W’gton v Canterbury this weekend in Nat Champs final here in Wg’ton. This should be a great game. Hopefully we can do it this year.
W’gton Phoenix had another win 1-0 in OZ yesterday.
I hate to mention the Black Caps v Bangladesh test match. They’ll (NZ) have to pull out a fantastic performance on 4th day to win.

Sorry to say no trip to Paris, 5 people got 6 million - hardly worth 3 couples having to split 6 million.
Next time ah.
Arte you logging your photos anywhere?

Petrol is down another 5c – now $1.77 a litre (unleaded).
Greens announced they will go with Labour in a coalition.
TAB opened with Cant $1.65 and Wgtn $2.20 for Saturdays Air NZ Cup final.

NZ eventually beat Bangladesh 317 for 7 (3 wicket victory) thanks to an all-round display from Vettori with two 50s and a nine-wicket haul.

India thrashed the Aussies who were outbatted, outbowled, outcaptained and outclassed.

Your holiday is nearly over :(
Thank you all for letting me share your wonderful travel adventures.
See you all soon.
