We forced ourselves to go out for dinner last night – it would have been so easy just to curl up at out apartment after the hectic couple of days we’ve had! The first photo is of us just before we headed out for dinner. This morning was an early start as we exited our lovely apartment and headed off to the train station. The Eurostar is very comfortable – and we would certainly recommend it to anyone travelling by train in Italy.
We changed trains in Mestre (near Venice) – the city is just as ugly as I remember (Karla). The regional train took us all the way through to Trieste. As we got into Trieste we all got good vibes about the place. It is spectacular – and a little similar to Wellington as it is based on hills leading down towards the sea. Our apartment is fantastic – very new – but not quite the attention to detail of the apartment in Florence.
Our first stop was Piazza della Unita – the main plaza in Trieste (the second photo). And boy was it magnificent. We had all expected something quite big - but it was spectacular in it’s size and the palazzos (palaces) that surround it. The information centre was extremely helpful and we have enough reading materials to plan our next day and a half in Trieste.
We found a bar – Martin’s Pub – where the bar lady spoke no English – but looked after us and introduced us to Portugese/Spanish singing. She was hilarious! We’ve decided that Neil needs to ditch the bierre in favour of vino – as it is significantly cheaper to buy a glass of wine (the wine was 2.50€ and the beer was 6.00€!).
We have been so lucky with the weather so far with days being fine and daytime temperatures being around 20 to 24 degrees while in Italy. Hope it continues.
We’ve got another big day tomorrow – just cramming everything in is going to be a challenge. So far, we have all commented on how lovely Trieste is – and without the tourists of Florence – it makes a fantastic change. Haven’t yet found an internet point – so the blog entries may be few and far between…
