Day 16 – In and Around Šibenik

Another beautiful day in paradise! That’s what we think Šibenik is anyway! The morning started with a wander around the local produce markets. No wonder they don’t sell many fruit and veges in the supermarket!!! After walking along the beautiful waterfront we took another tour up through the old town and made it all the way up to the Sv. Mihovil fortress to take in spectacular views of the city and the surrounds. This place is truly magic – a hidden gem!

From there it was off to Krka national park. We had some dodgy instructions from the information place there – but still managed to make it on a boat trip on the lake to Visovac island – which houses a Franciscan monastery since 1445. We had a quick wander around the small island and poked our nose inside the church – the monastery was off limits, as there are still practising monks there. Back on dry land we toured around ethic exhibits – including a traditional water mill, mill stones grinding flour, a blacksmiths, an old house etc. We also took in the view of the waterfalls at the park.

After a bus trip back into town, we had some nibbles and drinks on our deck and watched the sun set again. It is going to be hard to leave this place tomorrow. We could definitely spend more time here – even just to wander around the beautiful old medieval streets, along the waterfront etc to take in the sights. Šibenik is one of the most beautiful places we’ve all seen – here’s hoping that the remainder of our time in Croatia is as great as this is.
