Day 13 - The City of Zagreb

Today was National Independence Day - therefore a public holiday. We had a slightly later start to the day today after having trouble finding clean utensils in the apartment to prepare breakfast. Fortunately it did not impact to our plan to do a couple of walking tours of the upper town and the lower town. The upper town was definitely the highlight. Some of our favourite places are outlined below.

The cathedral of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St Stephen was one of the first stops. This is a massive church that is very awe inspiring - and the neo-gothic bell towers can be seen from all over the city.

We stopped for kava (not the Fijian kind - the Croatian kind (ie. coffee)) and cherry strudel (something new for us and really delicious). Then we moved on to the Stone Gate - the only remaining one of the four former entrances to the city (last reconstructed in 1760). It is basically a chapel - with a famous painting that was saved in a fire in 1731. It is said to have miraculous properties - and many people still come to worship it.

Zagreb is undergoing a lot of reconstruction - and it needs it. Many of the key sites we went to visit were covered in building materials and were undergoing upgrades so maybe the renovation necessary is now underway. One site that wasn't was the Lotrščak Tower – where for over a hundred years a cannon has been fired from the top of the tower at exactly noon each day.

In the lower town, the Marshal Tito square was the highlight – a massive building that was created for the Croatian National Theatre.

We stopped for a bite to eat at the Bulldog café near the main square (gee – it’s hard to find food here – but extremely easy to find bars). Street after street is covered with bars selling coffee and alcohol – but no food… we had to search quite hard to get something to eat!

We took a couple of excursions in the afternoon – but nothing of any particular note. We could have stayed one day less in Zagreb… hopefully the place we have chosen for dinner tonight to celebrate Karla’s birthday will be memorable – because the rest of the city isn’t. We’re struggling with ideas of how to fill our day tomorrow too…

Disappointing for you all that Zargreb is not what you thought it would be. I guess the war in the 1990s would have caused a lot of damage there. Hopefully you find Sibenik more inviting.
Taste Martinborough tickets sold out yesterday in 5 mins.
National announced it’s $6 billion tax package and are targeting middle income, singles and couples without kids (who don’t receive working from family money). They’ve reduced Kiwibank employee contributions to 2% (from 4%) and employers to 2%. Tax rebate much lower due to the appalling state of the books revealed on Mon, but still more than Labour offered. Taking into account the global financial uncertainty we currently have, I thought it a good plan.

From Karla: Thanks for everyone's thoughts on my birthday. It is quite strange to be so far away from friends and family on a special day. The texts are much appreciated - and although I won't answer them all - I promise they are all gratefully received! K.
